SOUL OF THE HERD
Photography Retreat in Denmark
A peaceful, powerful gathering for horse lovers and storytellers.
Photograph wild Exmoor ponies while discovering the wisdom they carry.

WORDS FROM PAST PARTICIPANTS:
The retreat "Soul of the Herd" was so much more than I ever expected. I went to Katja to experience her world and meet the wild ponies—and I came back with a heart full of new understandings about horses, and much less tolerance for the common techniques used in domestic horse keeping. This journey didn’t just give me a glimpse into a completely new world; it taught me so much about horses and gave me a voice to become their advocate, especially through my equine photography. Bringing in a specialist in horse behavior like Helle was a brilliant idea. I truly recommend this retreat to anyone who feels uneasy about how horses are treated in their surroundings—it’s an eye-opening adventure. As an extra “goodie,” the group of like-minded participants was simply amazing. They made this trip unforgettable and deeply intense in the best way. A piece of my heart stayed in Denmark.
I knew I would be at home on this retreat, as there were horses involved, and photography, but I didn't realise the impact it would have on me. I think when like-minded people come together - with two amazing women at the helm - magic really can happen. I left feeling freer, more knowledgeable with my camera, certainly more aware of equine behaviour and feeling such gratitude to be part of this first retreat. Grateful also for connecting with a group of wonderful people - new friends whom I didn't even know I needed until I met them. Thank you.
The connection was real. I will treasure these days always.
Just back from the Soul of the Herd retreat of Katja and Helle. I came home with a lot of new knowledge and I feel an inner happiness and peace after spending so many beautiful moments with the wild ponies together with a group like minded people. This weekend enriched me in so many ways, hard to capture in words…
I came home with a heart full of gratitude and a mind full of insight, from a retreat that changed the way I see—horses, photography, and a bit myself. I learned so much—about the deep, intuitive language of horses, and about photography as a way to truly feel what you see, and how you translate that into an image. What stood out most was the immense knowledge Katja and Helle did share with us participants — not just about photography and horse behavior, but also the subtle, deeply human insights. Very special was connecting with a group of like-minded souls. Open, curious, kind-hearted people who made the whole experience even more meaningful. I came away with so many thoughts and reflections, each helping me peel back the layers to get a clearer vision of what I want my photography to become. Thank you to everyone who made this retreat what it was.
I loved to have the opportunity to be with wild horses and being able to understand our domesticated horses better. Also gave me a lot to think about.
This retreat taught me more about how to put story in a picture, how to connect through pictures and how to observe. But also get inspired as an artist and this together with other beautiful artists.
